Lexicons

Words from every variety of Greek, with their source, page, place of record and how far we have checked them.

How do you say ?

Pontic by subject

The Atlas lexicons record words from the varieties of Greek together with their source, page, place of record and how far we have checked them. Every entry shows where it comes from and what is still missing.

The source and the tools

Ellinofonia is the reference point. This is where the evidence for every word is gathered from published sources and checked, and every source is named with its author and page. The community sites, such as the Pontic Dictionary, are the tools that bring this knowledge to speakers and to younger generations, in the way that suits them. The same knowledge reaches the researcher and the speaker.

How to read an entry

The word is written as the source gives it. The Latin transliteration is mechanical and does not represent pronunciation. IPA appears only when the source records it. The origin of a word is given only as the source states it. The checking scale counts independent sources, not how often the word is used today.

What is missing

Pontic is the first lexicon in progress. It is compiled and edited by Kyriakos Gold, who also wrote the meanings, and every entry is attested by the published sources it names. No entry has yet been reviewed by the editorial board. For Cypriot, Cretan, Griko and Epirotic, specialist dictionaries are an acquisition priority and have not been read yet. When a word does not appear for a variety, we have not recorded it. That does not mean the variety lacks it.

How to contribute

Researchers and speakers can propose a word, a correction or a local form through the Circle. A speaker's testimony is recorded as testimony, with its place, and the editorial board decides before anything is published.
